Split a refund across a card and a gift card using the net price
- For Customer support teams
- You practice Setting limits and rules
- Time about 5 minutes
- Level Advanced
About this exercise
Start with the line "SPLIT REFUND - order 8801". Then write three lines starting "Card: $", "Gift card: $" and "Total: $". The refund is the net price of the returned item after the promo, refunded to the card first up to what was paid by card, and any remainder to the gift card. Plain text, under 40 words.
Common mistakes when you ask AI for this
- Refunding the sticker price. The AI refunds $100. Try: Say: "Refund the net price after the promo: $90."
- Splitting by payment ratio. The AI splits $90 in proportion to payments. Try: Say: "Card first up to what was paid by card."
- Missing the title. The AI starts with the Card line. Try: Quote the title.
- Getting markdown back. AI adds bold and headings by default, which show up as stray symbols where this is pasted. Try: Say "plain text, no bold, no headings, no asterisks".
- Trusting the AI to count words. AI is bad at counting and usually runs long, so a vague "keep it short" lands well over the limit. Try: Cap each part instead of the total, for example "each line under 15 words".
What a strong prompt includes
- Quotes the title
- Names the three lines
- Uses the net price and the order of refund
- Asks for plain text
- Sets a length limit
