Decide a trial extension request in three labeled lines
- For Customer support teams
- You practice Setting limits and rules
- Time about 5 minutes
- Level Beginner
About this exercise
Output three lines starting "Decision: Extend" (or "Decision: Do not extend"), "New end date:" and "Customer line:". The customer line is one friendly sentence under 20 words that the agent can send. Use the system's end date, not the customer's. Plain text, under 50 words.
Common mistakes when you ask AI for this
- Using the customer's date. The AI counts from Nov 6. Try: Say: "Count from the system end date, Nov 8."
- Missing the labels. The AI writes a normal reply. Try: Name the three line starts.
- Customer line too long or without the date. The AI writes a paragraph. Try: Say: "One sentence under 20 words with the new date."
- Getting markdown back. AI adds bold and headings by default, which show up as stray symbols where this is pasted. Try: Say "plain text, no bold, no headings, no asterisks".
- Trusting the AI to count words. AI is bad at counting and usually runs long, so a vague "keep it short" lands well over the limit. Try: Cap each part instead of the total, for example "each line under 15 words".
What a strong prompt includes
- Names the line starts
- Says which end date to use
- Limits the customer line
- Asks for plain text
- Sets a length limit
