Work out a clinic supply reorder from par levels
Practice: Keeping the AI to your sources. About 5 minutes.
About this exercise
You're the clinic's supply lead placing Thursday's order. For each item, order = par − usable on hand − anything already on the way, and never below 0. Write exactly 4 numbered lines showing that subtraction and the order quantity. Apply the notes, plain text, under 80 words, nothing else.
Common mistakes when you ask AI for this
- Ignoring what's on the way. The AI orders 28 boxes of gloves while 10 are already arriving. Try: Add: "Subtract the 10 gloves already on order."
- Counting expired stock. The AI treats all 35 mask boxes as usable. Try: Add: "Expired boxes don't count as on hand."
- Negative orders. The AI writes −6 for table paper instead of 0. Try: Add: "Never order below 0."
- Not showing the subtraction. Bare quantities are hard to check before the cutoff. Try: Add a line to copy: "1. Gloves (M): 40 − 12 − 10 arriving = order 18"
- Trusting the AI to count words. AI is bad at counting. Ask for a total word limit and it often lands over it. Try: Cap each line: "each line under 14 words."
- Forgetting where it goes. AI loves markdown tables and bold, which show up as clutter in a vendor order form. Try: Add: "Plain text, no bold, headings or tables."
What a strong prompt includes
- Subtracts incoming orders
- Removes expired stock
- Floors at zero
- Asks to show the math
- Asks for plain text
