Make a large-print lobby sign for a flu shot clinic

Practice: Keeping the AI to your sources. About 5 minutes.

About this exercise

You're making a large-print sign for the clinic lobby about walk-in flu shots. Write exactly 3 lines, each under 9 words, plain text, no title line: days and corrected hours first, then what to bring, then who can't use the walk-in clinic. Write a prompt that gets you exactly that.

Common mistakes when you ask AI for this

  • Trusting the AI to count words. AI is bad at counting. Ask for "under 30 words" and it often lands well over. Try: Cap each part instead: "each line under 9 words."
  • Using the first hours. The 1-4 PM hours come first, and the correction is a line later. Try: Add: "Hours are 2-5 PM (corrected)."
  • Adding a headline. The AI adds a big title like "FLU SHOTS!" plus extra lines. Try: Add: "Exactly 3 lines, no title."
  • Cramming everything in. The AI adds COVID boosters, parking and dates, so the sign can't be read from across the room. Try: Add: "Line 2: bring insurance card. Line 3: ages 6 months to 8 need an appointment."
  • Ignoring where it will be pasted. AI loves bold and headings, which show up as stray ** and # symbols in the sign. Try: Name the place and the format: "For the sign. Plain text, no bold or headings."

What a strong prompt includes

  • Uses the corrected hours
  • Sets the number of lines
  • Caps each line
  • Drops the title
  • Asks for plain text
