Prepare questions for your interviewer that the posting doesn't answer

Practice: Keeping the AI to your sources. About 5 minutes.

About this exercise

You need questions to ask at the end of your interview. Write exactly 4 numbered questions, each under 18 words, each tied to something specific in the posting or your notes, plain text. Skip anything the posting already answers (like remote work or benefits), and don't ask about salary in this round. Write a prompt that gets you exactly that.

Common mistakes when you ask AI for this

  • No fixed count. The AI gives 10-15 generic questions under category headings. Try: Be exact: "Exactly 4 numbered questions, nothing else."
  • Trusting the AI to count words. AI is bad at counting. Ask for "under 80 words" and it often lands well over. Try: Cap each part instead: "each question under 16 words."
  • Generic questions. "What's the culture like?" could be asked anywhere. Try: Add: "Tie each question to something in the posting or my notes."
  • Asking what's already answered. The AI asks about remote work and benefits, which the posting covers, or about salary. Try: Add: "Skip what the posting answers. No salary questions."
  • Adding coaching. The AI explains why each question is good. Try: Add: "Questions only, no explanations."

What a strong prompt includes

  • Sets the number of questions
  • Ties to the posting
  • Skips answered topics
  • Rules out salary
  • Sets a word limit
