Write a Giving Tuesday post with the right match details

Practice: Keeping the AI to your sources. About 5 minutes.

About this exercise

You're writing your organization's Giving Tuesday social post. Keep it under 50 words, plain text, with exactly one link and no hashtags in the middle of sentences: lead with the match, using the corrected cap and the exact deadline, say what a gift does with one number from the notes, and skip clichés like "every dollar counts." Write a prompt that gets you exactly that.

Common mistakes when you ask AI for this

  • Trusting the AI to count words. AI is bad at counting. Ask for "under 50 words" and it often lands well over. Try: Cap each part instead: "3 sentences, each under 14 words."
  • Burying the match. The AI opens with a heartfelt line, and the match shows up last. Try: Add: "First sentence: the match, up to $10,000, until 11:59 PM ET Dec 1."
  • Using the old cap. $15,000 appears first in the notes, and the AI may use it. Try: Add: "The cap is $10,000 (corrected)."
  • Being vague about impact. "Your gift helps patients" says nothing concrete. Try: Add: "Say $35 covers one patient visit. One link only."
  • Using clichés. "Every dollar counts" is the AI's default fundraising line. Try: Add: "No clichés like every dollar counts or make a difference."
  • Ignoring where it will be pasted. AI loves bold and headings, which show up as stray ** and # symbols in the social post. Try: Name the place and the format: "For the social post. Plain text, no bold or headings."

What a strong prompt includes

  • Leads with the match
  • Uses the corrected cap
  • Gives a concrete impact
  • Bans clichés
  • Sets a word limit
