Prep three questions for a parent-teacher conference
Practice: Keeping the AI to your sources. About 5 minutes.
About this exercise
Your parent-teacher conference is only 15 minutes. Write exactly 3 numbered questions, each under 15 words and each tied to a specific grade or comment from the progress report, plain text. Put the lowest grade's question first, ask about what you can do at home in at least one of them, and don't ask about anything the report already explains. Write a prompt that gets you exactly that.
Common mistakes when you ask AI for this
- No fixed count. The AI gives 8-10 questions grouped by subject with tips. Try: Be exact: "Exactly 3 numbered questions, nothing else."
- Trusting the AI to count words. AI is bad at counting. Ask for "under 50 words" and it often lands well over. Try: Cap each part instead: "each question under 15 words."
- Not prioritizing. The AI follows the report order, so math, the biggest concern, lands second. Try: Add: "Question 1 is about math, the lowest grade."
- Generic questions. "How is she doing socially?" isn't tied to anything on the report. Try: Add: "Tie each question to a comment, and ask what we can do at home."
- Asking what's answered. The AI asks whether there's extra math help, which the report already says. Try: Add: "Don't ask about the intervention group; it's on the report."
What a strong prompt includes

- Puts math first
- Asks about home
- Skips answered topics
- Sets a word limit
