Write a rental listing with the updated pet policy

Practice: Keeping the AI to your sources. About 5 minutes.

About this exercise

You're a property manager writing an online rental listing. Keep it under 70 words, plain text: rent, deposit and available date in the first sentence, then the updated pet policy with its fee, then two features. Describe the unit, never the ideal tenant (no "perfect for professionals" or "great for a single person"), and add no amenities that aren't in the notes. Write a prompt that gets you exactly that.

Common mistakes when you ask AI for this

  • Trusting the AI to count words. AI is bad at counting. Ask for "under 70 words" and it often lands well over. Try: Cap each part instead: "4 sentences, each under 16 words."
  • Burying the basics. The AI opens with a catchy line and the rent appears later. Try: Add: "First sentence: rent, deposit, available date."
  • Using the old pet policy. "No pets" appears first; the update is below it. Try: Add: "Cats allowed, up to 2, $35/month each; no dogs."
  • Describing the tenant. The AI copies "perfect for a young professional" or adds a gym. Try: Add: "Describe the unit only. No tenant descriptions or extra amenities."
  • Ignoring where it will be pasted. AI loves bold and headings, which show up as stray ** and # symbols in the listing site. Try: Name the place and the format: "For the listing site. Plain text, no bold or headings."

What a strong prompt includes

  • Puts the basics first
  • Uses the new pet policy
  • Describes the unit, not the tenant
  • Rules out extra amenities
  • Sets a word limit
