Write a factual incident report for the assistant principal
Practice: Keeping the AI to your sources. About 5 minutes.
About this exercise
You saw a hallway incident and the assistant principal wants a written report. Write exactly 4 lines labeled "When:", "Where:", "What I saw:" and "Action taken:", under 80 words, plain text, no bullets. Include only what you saw or did yourself, not what students told you afterward, and no opinions about the students. Write a prompt that gets you exactly that.
Common mistakes when you ask AI for this
- No fixed shape. The AI writes a narrative paragraph with a summary and recommendations. Try: Be exact: "Exactly 4 lines: When:, Where:, What I saw:, Action taken:."
- Trusting the AI to count words. AI is bad at counting. Ask for "under 80 words" and it often lands well over. Try: Cap each part instead: "each line under 22 words."
- Losing specifics. The AI writes "a physical altercation in the hallway" instead of who did what. Try: Add: "Say exactly what I saw, with the time and place."
- Mixing in hearsay. The AI includes what students told you afterward, which you didn't witness. Try: Add: "Only what I saw or did. No student reports or opinions."
What a strong prompt includes
- Shows the 4 labels
- Limits to what you saw
- Rules out hearsay
- Rules out opinions
- Sets a word limit
