Pair mentees with mentors by goal and flag conflicts
- For HR and recruiting
- You practice Setting limits and rules
- Time about 5 minutes
- Level Intermediate
About this exercise
Match each mentee to one mentor by goal. A mentor cannot be paired with someone who reports to the same manager. Output a table with the header Mentee | Mentor | Reason, one row per mentee, where Reason is under 12 words. If the only fitting mentor shares a manager, write "No match yet" as the Mentor and say why. HR confirms all pairs. Plain text, under 100 words.
Common mistakes when you ask AI for this
- Ignoring the manager rule. The AI pairs Ayla with Pia. Try: Say: "A mentor cannot be paired with someone who reports to the same manager."
- Pairing Chloe with her own manager's mentor. The AI pairs Chloe with Quinn because of finance. Try: Say: "Match by goal and check each manager."
- No explanation. The AI writes only names. Try: Say: "Reason under 12 words; for no match, say why."
- Wrong table. The AI adds columns. Try: Say: "Header Mentee | Mentor | Reason, four rows."
- Markdown. The AI bolds the header. Try: Say: "Plain text."
- Trusting the AI to count words. AI is bad at counting. Ask for a total word limit and it often lands over it. Try: Cap each part instead, for example: "each line under 15 words."
What a strong prompt includes
