About this exercise
Write 6 skip-level questions for engineers two levels below you, grouped in three themes with two questions each. Format: a theme line (Work:, People: or Growth:) followed by two numbered questions (1. 2.), restarting at 1 under each theme. Questions are open, under 16 words, none mentions a person by name, and none asks the engineer to rate their manager.
Common mistakes when you ask AI for this
- Leading questions. The AI asks 'Don't you think deploys are slow?'. Try: Say: "Open, non-leading questions only."
- Naming managers. The AI uses names. Try: Say: "No manager names, no ratings, no compensation."
- Wrong grouping. The AI writes a flat list. Try: Say: "Three themes, two numbered questions each."
- Missing the known concerns. The AI asks generic questions. Try: Say: "Cover deploy approvals, promotion paths and cross-team collaboration."
- Trusting the AI to count words. AI is bad at counting. Ask for a total word limit and it often lands over it. Try: Cap each question: "each under 14 words."
- Trusting the AI to count words. AI is bad at counting. Ask for a total word limit and it often lands over it. Try: Cap each part instead, for example: "each line under 12 words."
