About this exercise

Prepare for the renewal call in plain text with exactly 4 lines. Lines 1 to 3 start with [ ] and are questions to ask the vendor, one each about auto-renewal, price increases and ending early, each naming its section number. Line 4 starts with "Ask Legal:" and raises the liability clause by section number without saying whether it is acceptable. Use only the contract excerpt. Each line is under 28 words.

Common mistakes when you ask AI for this

  • Giving a legal opinion. The AI says the liability cap is too low. Try: Say: "Raise section 9.3 for Legal without saying if it is acceptable."
  • No section numbers. The AI asks generic questions. Try: Say: "Each line names its section number."
  • Statements instead of questions. The AI writes advice. Try: Say: "Lines 1 to 3 are questions for the vendor."
  • Wrong shape. The AI writes extra lines or a summary. Try: Say: "Exactly 4 lines: three [ ] lines and one Ask Legal: line."
  • Markdown. The AI bolds sections. Try: Say: "Plain text."
  • Trusting the AI to count words. AI is bad at counting. Ask for a total word limit and it often lands over it. Try: Cap each part instead, for example: "each line under 15 words."

What a strong prompt includes

  • Fixes the line format
  • Requires section numbers
  • Says no legal conclusion
  • Restricts to the excerpt
  • Caps length
