Rewrite two dense clauses in plain English with a legal question
- For Legal teams
- You practice Getting the tone right
- Time about 5 minutes
- Level Intermediate
About this exercise
Rewrite each clause in plain English for a non-lawyer, in plain text. For each clause use two lines: Clause 5.2: (or 9.1:) followed by a version under 30 words with every number kept, then Ask legal: with one question. Four lines in all. Do not say whether the clause is fair, enforceable or normal, and do not add anything the clause does not say.
Common mistakes when you ask AI for this
- Dropping a number. The AI says 'a few months before' instead of 90 days. Try: Say: "Keep every number."
- Adding judgment. The AI says this is a standard, fair clause. Try: Say: "Do not say whether it is fair, normal or enforceable."
- Missing the legal question. The AI explains but never asks. Try: Say: "After each rewrite add Ask legal: and one question."
- Wrong structure. The AI groups both clauses into a paragraph. Try: Say: "Four lines in all: clause, Ask legal, clause, Ask legal."
- Trusting the AI to count words. AI runs long. Try: Say: "Each line under 30 words."
- Markdown. The AI bolds clause names. Try: Say: "Plain text, no bold."
