Escalate a received document request to counsel
- For Legal teams
- You practice Giving the right context
- Time about 5 minutes
- Level Intermediate
About this exercise
Write a plain-text message to Marcus Webb, outside counsel, under 90 words. The first line is exactly: Escalation: document request received. Then state what arrived, the date it was received, the response date stated in the request, and who has already acted, including anything reception already said. The last line is exactly: Please advise next steps. Say nothing about whether the company has to comply.
Common mistakes when you ask AI for this
- Compliance advice. The AI says the company should or must respond. Try: Say: "Say nothing about whether we have to comply."
- Reception call hidden. The AI leaves out that Sam already spoke to them. Try: Say: "Include what reception already said."
- Wrong first or last line. The AI adds a greeting or sign-off. Try: Say: "First line and last line exactly as given."
- Trusting the AI to count words. AI is bad at counting. Ask for a total word limit and it often lands over it. Try: Cap each part instead, for example: "each line under 15 words."
- Markdown. The AI bolds words or adds headings. Try: Say: "Plain text, no bold, no headings."
What a strong prompt includes
- Fixed lines
- Key facts
- Who acted
- No compliance view
- Word cap
