About this exercise

You got a $1,800 hospital bill and the letter lists ways to pay. Get exactly 4 numbered lines in plain text, under 80 words: 1. the pay-in-full price with the discount math; 2. the payment plan's monthly amount with the math; 3. the financial assistance deadline, using the corrected date; 4. one question for the billing office, starting "Ask:". No advice about which to pick. Write a prompt that gets you exactly that.

Common mistakes when you ask AI for this

  • Missing the correction. The AI gives December 15 from the letter and misses the insert. Try: Add: "Use the insert's corrected assistance deadline."
  • No math shown. The AI gives totals with no working, so you can't check them. Try: Show it: "1. Pay in full: $1,800 - 15% ($270) = $1,530 by Dec 4".
  • Getting advice. The AI picks an option for you or echoes the friend's idea about waiting. Try: Add: "No advice about which to pick. Line 4: Ask: one question."
  • Trusting the AI to count words. AI is bad at counting. Ask for "under 80 words" and it often lands well over. Try: Cap each part: "each line under 16 words."
  • Leaving the format to the AI. The AI adds a title, bold labels and sub-bullets, which turns a quick note into a page. Try: Add: "Plain text, no bold, no headings, no intro."
