Find what you really owe on an insurance EOB

  • For Nurses and healthcare workers
  • You practice Keeping the AI to your sources
  • Time about 5 minutes

About this exercise

You're a nurse, but on your own MRI paperwork you're just a patient. Your insurer's Explanation of Benefits has a summary box and a reprocessing note further down. Get exactly 4 numbered lines in plain text, under 90 words: 1. the total you may owe, showing the addition; 2. the MRI line; 3. the radiologist line and what changed; 4. one question to ask the imaging center's billing office before you pay. Use only the EOB's numbers. Write a prompt that gets you exactly that.

Common mistakes when you ask AI for this

  • Trusting the summary box. The AI reads the big total at the top and repeats $630, missing the reprocessing notice at the bottom. Try: Add: "Use the 10/02 reprocessing notice, not the summary box."
  • Not asking for the math. The AI states a total with no working, so you can't check it against the EOB. Try: Say: "Line 1 shows the addition, like $180 + $40 = $220."
  • Getting a full insurance lesson. The AI explains deductibles, coinsurance and appeal rights at length instead of what changed on your claim. Try: Say: "Exactly 4 numbered lines, one sentence each. Line 3: what changed on the radiologist line."
  • Trusting the AI to count words. AI is bad at counting. Ask for "under 90 words" and it often lands well over. Try: Cap each line: "each line one sentence under 18 words."
  • Leaving the format to the AI. The AI adds a title, bold labels and sub-bullets, which turns a quick note into a page. Try: Add: "Plain text, no bold, no headings, no intro."

What a strong prompt includes

  • Sets the number of lines
  • Uses the reprocessing note
  • Asks for the math
  • Asks for a question to the billing office
  • Sets a word limit
