Find how and when to cancel a gym membership
- For Office and admin
- You practice Keeping the AI to your sources
- Time about 5 minutes
About this exercise
You want to cancel your gym membership before the annual fee hits. From the contract and its update, get exactly 4 numbered lines in plain text, under 80 words: 1. how to cancel; 2. the last day to cancel to avoid the annual fee, with the date math; 3. the annual fee amount; 4. "This isn't legal advice." Use only the contract. Write a prompt that gets you exactly that.
Common mistakes when you ask AI for this
- Missing the update. The AI uses the original 30-day notice and in-person-only rule. Try: Add: "Use the Sept 1 update: the app is allowed and notice is 10 days."
- No date math. The AI says "10 days before" without giving the date. Try: Add: "Line 2: January 15 minus 10 days = [date]."
- Repeating the coworker. The AI suggests blocking charges with your bank. Try: Add: "Only the contract's methods. Line 4: This isn't legal advice."
- Trusting the AI to count words. AI is bad at counting. Ask for "under 80 words" and it often lands well over. Try: Cap each part: "each line under 16 words."
- Leaving the format to the AI. The AI adds a title, bold labels and sub-bullets, which turns a quick note into a page. Try: Add: "Plain text, no bold, no headings, no intro."
What a strong prompt includes

- Asks for the date math
