Figure out what an HOA notice actually asks you to do

  • For Parents and households
  • You practice Keeping the AI to your sources
  • Time about 5 minutes

About this exercise

Your homeowners association sent a violation notice. Get exactly 4 numbered lines in plain text, under 80 words: 1. what the violation is; 2. the fix-by date; 3. the fine if it's not fixed, with the math for 2 weeks late; 4. how to request a hearing, from the notice. End with "This isn't legal advice." Use the notice's own numbers. Write a prompt that gets you exactly that.

Common mistakes when you ask AI for this

  • No fine math. The AI repeats the fine rules without saying what you'd actually owe. Try: Add: "Line 3: the fine if 2 weeks late, like $25 + $10 x 14 = $[total]."
  • Missing the hearing deadline. The AI mentions a hearing but not that it must be in writing within 10 days. Try: Add: "Line 4: how and by when to request a hearing, from the notice."
  • Answering legal questions. The AI weighs in on the neighbor's claim or invents worries about your lights. Try: Add: "Use only the notice. No legal opinions. End: This isn't legal advice."
  • Getting a long reply. The AI writes a section per topic with headings. Try: Say: "Exactly 4 numbered lines, one sentence each. Plain text."
  • Trusting the AI to count words. AI is bad at counting. Ask for "under 90 words" and it often lands well over. Try: Cap each part: "each line under 18 words."

What a strong prompt includes

  • Asks for the fine math
  • Asks about the hearing
  • Adds the disclaimer
  • Sets the number of lines
