Pull the dates and steps out of a jury summons
- For Small business owners
- You practice Keeping the AI to your sources
- Time about 5 minutes
About this exercise
You got a jury summons and run a small shop, so you need to plan. Get exactly 4 numbered lines in plain text, under 110 words: 1. when and where to report, using the updated time; 2. the deadline to respond online; 3. the rule for asking to postpone, from the summons; 4. "This isn't legal advice." Use only the summons. Write a prompt that gets you exactly that.
Common mistakes when you ask AI for this
- Missing the insert. The AI gives the 8:00 AM main courthouse time from the summons body. Try: Add: "Use the insert's updated time and place."
- No date math. The AI says "within 10 days" without the date. Try: Add: "Line 2: November 3 + 10 days = [date]."
- Repeating the neighbor. The AI echoes the idea that summons can be ignored, or gives legal opinions. Try: Add: "Use only the summons. Line 4: This isn't legal advice."
- Trusting the AI to count words. AI is bad at counting. Ask for "under 110 words" and it often lands well over. Try: Cap each part: "each line under 18 words."
- Leaving the format to the AI. The AI adds a title, bold labels and sub-bullets, which turns a quick note into a page. Try: Add: "Plain text, no bold, no headings, no intro."
What a strong prompt includes
- Uses the insert
- Asks for the date math
- Asks about postponing
- Adds the disclaimer
- Sets a word limit
