Write a landing page hero that only promises what ships
Practice: Keeping the AI to your sources. About 5 minutes.
About this exercise
You're the PM for Swapshift, a shift-swap app for retail stores, and you need the landing page hero section for launch. Write exactly 3 labeled lines: Headline: (under 8 words), Subhead: (under 20 words) and Button: (under 4 words). Mention only features marked shipping in v1, and lead the headline with the main pain from the store manager interviews. Plain text, nothing else.
Common mistakes when you ask AI for this
- Asking for "landing page copy". The AI writes a whole page: hero, features, testimonials and FAQs, with markdown headings. Try: Name the section: "Only the hero: Headline, Subhead, Button."
- Not saying what ships. The AI lists every feature in the spec, including the v2 ones legal said not to promise. Try: Add: "Only v1 features. No payroll, integrations or offline mode."
- Leaving the research out. Without a pointer, the AI writes a generic headline about "scheduling made easy". Try: Add: "The headline is about last-minute call-outs, the top pain in interviews."
- Trusting the AI to count words. AI is bad at counting and pads each line. Try: Give per-line limits under your real ones: "Headline 4 to 6 words."
- Getting markdown. The AI bolds labels and adds a heading for the hero. Try: Add: "Plain text, no bold, no headings."
What a strong prompt includes
