About this exercise
Your designer, Wen, needs a brief for the holiday display banner. Write a prompt for exactly six plain-text lines labeled Size:, Headline:, Subhead:, CTA:, Must include: and Must avoid:. Headline is 7 words or fewer and subhead is 12 words or fewer. This round is only the 300x250 size, and only approved offers can be used.
Common mistakes when you ask AI for this
- Including both sizes. The AI lists 728x90 too. Try: Say: "This round is only 300x250."
- Using 50% off. The AI picks up the sales request. Try: Say: "Only approved offers; 20% off through Dec 12."
- Skipping the avoid list. The AI forgets the brand rules. Try: List the Must include and Must avoid lines.
- Free-form brief. The AI writes a paragraph or table. Try: List the six labels in order.
- Letting markdown through. AI adds bold text and headings by default. Try: Add: "Plain text only, no bold, no headings."
- Trusting the AI to count words. AI is bad at counting and often runs past a word limit. Try: Cap each part (for example "each line under 15 words") so the total lands well under the limit.
What a strong prompt includes
- Lists the six labels
- Fixes the size
- Limits to the approved offer
- Caps headline and subhead
- Asks for plain text
