Write a landing page hero from a spec that promises only what ships
- For Small business owners
- You practice Keeping the AI to your sources
- Time about 5 minutes
- Level Beginner
About this exercise
You write the homepage hero for Quillstack, a note-taking app for small teams. Write a prompt for exactly three plain-text lines: "Headline:" (8 words or fewer), "Subhead:" (under 20 words), and "Button:" (3 words or fewer). Promise only what ships today. Do not mention features that are in beta or planned, and don't use the words revolutionary, effortless or AI-powered.
Common mistakes when you ask AI for this
- Promising beta features. The AI loves the assistant summaries and works them into the hero. Try: Add: "Promise only features that ship today; skip beta and planned ones."
- Reusing the old buzzwords. The AI echoes the current homepage line. Try: Name the banned words: revolutionary, effortless, AI-powered.
- Going past the limits. Headlines get long without a word cap. Try: Give each line a cap, like 'Headline 8 words or fewer'.
- Letting markdown through. AI adds bold text and headings by default. Try: Add: "Plain text only, no bold, no headings."
- Trusting the AI to count words. AI is bad at counting and often runs past a word limit. Try: Cap each part (for example "each line under 15 words") so the total lands well under the limit.
What a strong prompt includes
- Names the three labels
- Caps each line
- Limits to shipping features
- Bans buzzwords
- Asks for plain text
