About this exercise

You are launching the Tidewell app on Apr 14, when the landing page goes live. Write a prompt that turns the task list into a checklist with one line per open task, formatted "- [ ] Owner | Task | Due Mon DD", sorted by due date with the earliest first, at most 10 lines. Leave out done tasks and duplicates. Legal must get the page copy at least 7 days before go-live, so fix that due date if it breaks the rule. No intro or other text.

Common mistakes when you ask AI for this

  • Keeping the due date that breaks the rule. The AI copies dates as written and misses that Apr 10 is only 4 days before go-live. Try: Add: "Legal must have the copy 7 days before Apr 14, so correct that due date to Apr 7."
  • Listing done and duplicate tasks. The AI includes everything in the export. Try: Add: "Leave out Done tasks and merge duplicates."
  • Keeping the tracker's order. The AI leaves tasks in the order they were pasted. Try: Add: "Sort by due date, earliest first."
  • Letting the checklist run long. A full tracker produces an overlong list with chatter. Try: State the cap and the exact line format.
  • Trusting the AI to count words. AI is bad at counting and often runs past a word limit. Try: Cap each part (for example "each line under 15 words") so the total lands well under the limit.

What a strong prompt includes

  • Gives the exact line format
  • Sorts by date
  • Drops done and duplicate tasks
  • Fixes the legal date
  • Caps the lines
