About this exercise

You're editing the Dockside Weekly newsletter and want a TL;DR at the top. Write a prompt for a first line exactly "TL;DR in 30 seconds:" and exactly 3 dash bullets, one per section in the order of the issue, each in the form "Section name: what you'll get" under 14 words and stating the quantity the section holds, ending with the exact link text in square brackets. Use only the issue contents, and don't promise anything beyond them.

Common mistakes when you ask AI for this

  • Including the sponsor. The AI adds the sponsor message as a bullet. Try: Say: "One bullet per section; the sponsor isn't a section."
  • Promising the rumor. The AI hints that fee increases are covered. Try: Say: "Don't promise anything beyond the issue contents."
  • Changing the link text. The AI writes its own call to action. Try: Say: "End each bullet with the exact link text in square brackets."
  • Letting markdown through. AI adds bold text and headings by default. Try: Add: "Plain text only, no bold, no headings."
  • Too many bullets. AI turns everything into long bullet lists. Try: State the bullet cap exactly.
  • Trusting the AI to count words. AI is bad at counting and often runs past a word limit. Try: Cap each part (for example "each line under 15 words") so the total lands well under the limit.

What a strong prompt includes

  • Gives the bullet form
  • Requires exact link text
  • Fixes count and order
  • Limits to the contents
  • Caps length
