About this exercise

You're preparing a one-page memo that compares Lumio Surveys to its rival Pollbright for the sales team. Write a prompt for plain text with exactly three headings in capitals, in this order: WHERE WE WIN, WHERE THEY WIN, CAN'T CONFIRM. Put up to 2 dash bullets under each, each under 15 words, and use only the evidence list. Anything that came from a review or hearsay goes under CAN'T CONFIRM.

Common mistakes when you ask AI for this

  • Treating reviews as facts. The AI puts hearsay under wins and losses. Try: Add: "Anything from a review, rumor or our own team without a source goes under CAN'T CONFIRM."
  • Hiding where they win. Sales memos tend to flatter us, so the AI leaves out rival strengths. Try: Add: "WHERE THEY WIN must have real page facts."
  • Using its own headings. The AI invents sections like Overview and Recommendations. Try: List the three headings in capitals and say 'no other headings'.
  • Too many bullets. Memos grow long without a cap. Try: Say: "At most 2 bullets per heading, each under 15 words."
  • Letting markdown through. AI adds bold text and headings by default. Try: Add: "Plain text only, no bold, no headings."
  • Trusting the AI to count words. AI is bad at counting and often runs past a word limit. Try: Cap each part (for example "each line under 15 words") so the total lands well under the limit.

What a strong prompt includes

  • Names the three headings
  • Caps bullets
  • Separates fact from hearsay
  • Uses only the evidence
  • Asks for plain text and a length
