Fill a weekend on-call handoff with corrected contact numbers
- For Operations and supply chain
- You practice Asking for a format you can use
- Time about 5 minutes
- Level Intermediate
About this exercise
Write a prompt that fills a weekend handoff with exactly five lines starting "Primary contact:", "Backup:", "Watch list:", "Do not touch:" and "Escalate to:". Use the corrected phone numbers. Escalate to lists the exact conditions for calling the director. Plain text, under 100 words.
Common mistakes when you ask AI for this
- Using the typo number. The AI uses 555-0183 because it appears first. Try: Say: "Use corrected phone numbers only."
- Dropping an escalation condition. The AI summarizes 'serious problems' for the director. Try: Say: "Escalate to: Nora Whitfield with her number and all three conditions."
- Wrong lines. The AI writes a narrative. Try: Quote the five labels in order.
- Getting markdown back. AI adds bold, headings and bullets by default, which show up as stray symbols where this is pasted. Try: Say "plain text, no bold, no headings, no asterisks".
- Trusting the AI to count words. AI is bad at counting and usually runs long, so a vague "keep it short" lands over the limit. Try: Cap each part instead of the total, for example "each line under 15 words".
What a strong prompt includes
- Quotes the five labels
- Asks for corrected numbers
- Lists what goes on each line
- Asks for all three conditions
- Asks for plain text
