Write the in-scope and out-of-scope lines for a PRD
Practice: Keeping the AI to your sources. About 5 minutes.
About this exercise
You're writing the Scope section of a PRD so nobody argues about it later. You need a line 'In scope:' followed by exactly 3 bullets, then 'Out of scope:' followed by exactly 2 bullets, so at most 5 bullets in total, each under 12 words, plain text. Use the final decisions from the kickoff, including the item that moved out, and don't add scope that nobody discussed.
Common mistakes when you ask AI for this
- Asking for 'a scope section'. The AI writes headings, goals, assumptions and long bullet lists. Try: Be exact: "'In scope:' with 3 bullets, then 'Out of scope:' with 2 bullets. Plain text."
- Missing the updates. Deposits and custom intervals look in scope in the first notes, and the AI keeps them. Try: Add: "Use the updates: deposits are out, custom intervals appear nowhere."
- Splitting or padding the list. The AI lists every agreed item as its own bullet, so you get 4 or 5 in-scope bullets. Try: Add: "Combine the two cancel items into one bullet so In scope has exactly 3."
What a strong prompt includes
- Shows the two labels
- Sets bullet counts
- Uses the updates
- Forbids new scope
- Asks for plain text
