Report weekly ticket trends after categories were merged

Practice: Catching mistakes and made-up facts. About 5 minutes.

About this exercise

Your support director wants this week's ticket trends in 3 bullets for her Monday report. You want at most 3 bullets, plain text, each with this week's number and last week's, under 70 words. The team merged two categories this week, so last week's numbers for them must be added together for a fair comparison, with the math shown. Write a prompt that gets you exactly that.

Common mistakes when you ask AI for this

  • Not mentioning the merge. The AI compares the new category to just one old one and reports a rise that didn't happen. Try: Add: "Account access replaced login + password resets. Add last week's two numbers together."
  • Not asking for the math. The AI states a change without showing how it got there. Try: Add: "Show the math for the merged category, like '64 + 48 = 112'."
  • Dropping the cause. Squeezed for space, the AI cuts why shipping tickets jumped. Try: Add: "Say what's behind the shipping jump."
  • Not limiting the bullets. The AI writes a full report with bold headings and a table. Try: Be exact: "At most 3 bullets, each with this week vs. last week. Plain text."
  • Trusting the AI to count words. AI is bad at counting. Ask for "under 70 words" and it often lands well over. Try: Cap each part instead: "each line under 16 words."

What a strong prompt includes

  • Limits the bullets
  • Mentions the merge
  • Asks for the math
  • Asks for both weeks
  • Sets a word limit
