Plan open enrollment reminders around an extended deadline
Practice: Saying who it's for. About 5 minutes.
About this exercise
You run benefits at a 200-person company and need the open enrollment reminder plan for your HR team. You want exactly 5 numbered lines in date order, each as date - channel - message in a few words, under 70 words, plain text. The vendor extended the enrollment window, so time the reminders to the new close date, and leave out the internal pricing notes. Write a prompt that gets you exactly that.
Common mistakes when you ask AI for this
- Using the old window. The Nov 21 close is at the top, so the AI counts back from it. Try: Add: "The window now closes Dec 1. Time every reminder from that."
- Leaking internal notes. The AI includes the price increase in a reminder message. Try: Add: "Leave out internal pricing and broker notes."
- Not giving the line shape. The AI writes a comms plan with headings and full message drafts. Try: Add: "Each line: date - channel - message in a few words."
- Letting the AI pick the layout. The AI adds a table and bold dates. Try: Be exact: "Exactly 5 numbered lines, plain text."
- Trusting the AI to count words. AI is bad at counting. Ask for "under 70 words" and it often lands well over. Try: Cap each part instead: "each line under 9 words."
What a strong prompt includes
- Says how many lines
- Uses the new window
- Shows the line shape
- Hides internal notes
- Sets a word limit
