Recount the quarter's sales commit after deals slip
Practice: Catching mistakes and made-up facts. About 5 minutes.
About this exercise
Your VP of Sales wants your team's Q4 commit number before the forecast call. You want at most 3 bullets under 60 words, plain text, with the corrected commit total and its math in the first bullet. Remove the deal that was lost and the one that slipped to next quarter, and leave out deals that were never in commit. Write a prompt that gets you exactly that.
Common mistakes when you ask AI for this
- Not asking for the math. The AI states a number without showing which deals are in it. Try: Add: "Show the math: list the deals that add up to the commit."
- Missing the updates. The commit list still shows all four deals, and the AI uses last week's total. Try: Add: "Remove the lost deal and the one that slipped to Q1."
- Mixing in best case. The AI adds Marlow to make the number look better. Try: Add: "Only commit deals. Don't add best case."
- Not limiting the bullets. The AI writes a full pipeline review with bold headings. Try: Be exact: "At most 3 bullets, plain text."
- Trusting the AI to count words. AI is bad at counting. Ask for "under 60 words" and it often lands well over. Try: Cap each part instead: "each line under 14 words."
What a strong prompt includes
- Limits the bullets
- Asks for the math
- Applies the updates
- Only commit deals
- Puts the total first
