Answer a family's visiting questions from the current policy
Practice: Keeping the AI to your sources. About 5 minutes.
About this exercise
A patient's daughter left 3 questions at the nurses' station about visiting, and you want to write answers on a note card. You want 3 numbered answers under 50 words total, in plain text, using the visitor policy plus the flu-season update that's now in effect. Where neither document answers a question, write "Please ask the charge nurse" instead of guessing.
Common mistakes when you ask AI for this
- Missing the seasonal update. The main policy says 3 visitors and kids with an adult, and the AI may answer from it. Try: Say: "Apply the flu-season update; it overrides the policy now."
- Guessing on food. Neither document covers outside food, so the AI answers from what hospitals usually allow, which may not fit this patient. Try: Add: "If neither document answers it, write Please ask the charge nurse."
- Trusting the AI to count words. AI is bad at counting. Ask for a total word limit and it often lands 10-20% over. Try: Cap each answer: "each answer under 15 words."
- Getting markdown back. AI defaults to bold labels and headings, which show up as stray symbols in a handwritten note card. Try: Ask for "plain text, no bold, no headings."
What a strong prompt includes
- Applies the update
- Says what to do when it's not covered
- Says who it's for
- Sets a length limit
- Asks for plain text
