Pull only the required qualifications from a job posting
Practice: Keeping the AI to your sources. About 5 minutes.
About this exercise
You're tailoring your resume for an operations coordinator job and want a checklist of what the posting truly requires. You want exactly 5 numbered lines, one per required qualification, each under 10 words, in plain text and nothing else. Leave out preferred items, generic traits the posting doesn't list, and anything from the recruiter's message that the posting doesn't say.
Common mistakes when you ask AI for this
- Not separating required from preferred. The AI merges both lists into one long 'qualifications' summary. Try: Say: "Only the items under Required. Skip Preferred."
- Trusting the recruiter's version. The recruiter's message sounds confident, so the AI may use 5 years and add the degree. Try: Add: "The posting wins over the recruiter's message."
- Getting resume advice instead. The AI assumes you want help tailoring and adds tips for each item. Try: Say: "Output only the 5 lines, no advice."
- Not saying how many. The AI decides the length itself and usually returns more lines than you can use. Try: Be exact: "exactly 5 numbered lines."
- Getting markdown back. AI defaults to bold labels and headings, which show up as stray symbols in your checklist. Try: Ask for "plain text, no bold, no headings."
What a strong prompt includes
- Asks for required items only
- Says the posting wins
- Says exactly how many
- Limits each line
