Pull word-for-word customer quotes with interview IDs

Practice: Keeping the AI to your sources. About 5 minutes.

About this exercise

You're writing a product page section about how hard setup used to be, and legal requires word-for-word customer quotes. You want exactly 3 numbered lines, each a direct quote about setup copied exactly from the transcripts, followed by the interview ID in parentheses. Skip the researcher's paraphrased notes, quote only customers who agreed to be quoted, and output nothing else in plain text.

Common mistakes when you ask AI for this

  • Not checking permission. Priya's quote is the most on-message, so the AI picks it without noticing she said no. Try: Say: "Only quote customers marked permission: YES."
  • Quoting the notes. The researcher's summaries sound quotable, and the AI may present them as customer quotes. Try: Add: "Copy quotes exactly from the transcripts. Skip the researcher's notes."
  • Dropping the source. Legal needs to trace every quote, and the AI rarely adds IDs unless asked. Try: Show it: "End each quote with the ID, like (INT-04)."
  • Not saying how many. The AI decides the length itself and usually returns more quotes than you can use. Try: Be exact: "exactly 3 numbered quotes."
  • Getting markdown back. AI defaults to bold labels and headings, which show up as stray symbols in the legal review form. Try: Ask for "plain text, no bold, no headings."
