Pick kid-friendly, trustworthy sources for a 5th grade unit

Practice: Setting limits and rules. About 5 minutes.

About this exercise

Your 5th graders start a research project on honeybees, and you want a short list of sources for the class page. Your rules: written for grades 3-6, from a museum, government agency, university or the school library database, and not selling anything. You want exactly 3 numbered picks, each with a reason under 12 words, using only the details in your list, plain text, nothing else.

Common mistakes when you ask AI for this

  • Not giving your rules. The AI favors the most authoritative-sounding sources, like the university article, even when kids can't read them. Try: Spell it out: "Grades 3-6 reading level, trusted publisher, not selling anything."
  • Missing the sales page. The toy page has kid-level fun facts, so it can slip in unless you rule out sellers. Try: Add: "No pages selling a product."
  • Getting lesson ideas. The AI adds activity suggestions for the unit, which buries your 3 picks. Try: Say: "Output only the 3 picks."
  • Not saying how many. The AI decides the length itself and usually returns more picks than you can use. Try: Be exact: "exactly 3 numbered picks."
  • Getting markdown back. AI defaults to bold labels and headings, which show up as stray symbols in the class web page. Try: Ask for "plain text, no bold, no headings."
