About this exercise

You are Priya Nair in Risk & Compliance. Write a prompt for a plain-text email to Dana Okoye, marketing manager, about three launch claims. Under 120 words. Start with the line "Subject: Claims to substantiate before launch", then "Hi Dana,". Name each claim with the gap in the notes, ask for the missing documents by Friday, and don't say any claim is unlawful or must be removed. End with the line "Priya Nair, Risk & Compliance".

Common mistakes when you ask AI for this

  • Subject or sign-off missing. AI writes its own subject and signs with a generic closing. Try: Quote the exact subject line and sign-off in the prompt.
  • Gaps glossed over. AI writes 'please substantiate' without the figures. Try: Say: "One line per claim stating the gap from the notes."
  • Legal tone. AI warns about legal exposure or tells Marketing to pull claims. Try: Say: "Do not say any claim is unlawful or must be removed; ask for documents by Friday."
  • Getting markdown back. AI adds bold, headings and bullets by default, which show up as stray symbols when pasted. Try: Say "plain text, no bold, no headings, no asterisks".
  • Trusting the AI to count words. AI is bad at counting and usually runs long, so a vague "keep it short" lands over the limit. Try: Cap each part instead of the total, for example "each line under 15 words".

What a strong prompt includes

  • Names the reader
  • Sets the deadline
