Build call talking points from sourced research, not rumors

Practice: Keeping the AI to your sources. About 5 minutes.

About this exercise

Tomorrow you call Priya Nair, CFO of Corvane Foods. You sell Ledgerly, software that automates paying supplier invoices. You want at most 3 bullets of talking points, each linking one fact from your research notes to Ledgerly and naming its source in parentheses. Keep it under 90 words, plain text, with nothing from the unconfirmed forum post and no facts beyond your notes. Write a prompt that gets that list.

Common mistakes when you ask AI for this

  • Saying "research this company". The AI writes a long company profile with headings and adds facts it thinks it knows, which may be wrong or made up. Try: Ask for the exact output: "At most 3 bullets of talking points, using only my notes."
  • Trusting the AI to count words. AI is bad at counting. Ask for "under 90 words" and it often lands well over. Try: Cap each part instead, like "each line under 20 words," so the total lands well under 90.
  • Not asking for sources. The AI blends everything into smooth claims. On the call, you can't tell which facts are solid. Try: Add: "End each bullet with its source in parentheses."
  • Using the rumor. The AI treats every line in your notes as equally true, so it may turn the layoff rumor into a "budget pressure" angle. Try: Say it: "Skip the unconfirmed forum post entirely."
  • Not saying it's for your own quick read. AI formats like a report, with bold and headings you have to skim past. Try: Add: "Plain text, no bold or headings."

What a strong prompt includes

  • Says what you sell
  • Limits the bullets
  • Asks for sources
  • Excludes the rumor
  • Says to use only the notes
