Group ACT transition words by what they do

Practice: Keeping the AI to your sources. About 5 minutes.

About this exercise

ACT English keeps testing transition words. Get exactly 4 numbered lines in the form 'Function: word, word, word', one each for Contrast, Cause-effect, Addition and Example, plain text, nothing else. Use only words from your tutor's list, and follow her correction about where 'therefore' goes.

Common mistakes when you ask AI for this

  • Not saying how many lines. The AI picks its own number, and it usually picks more lines than you need. Try: Be exact: "Exactly 4 numbered lines."
  • Asking for a list. The AI lists dozens of transitions with example sentences, not a quick-review sheet. Try: Show the shape: "Contrast: however, nevertheless, on the other hand".
  • Missing the correction. Your notes still list 'therefore' under contrast. Try: Add: "Therefore goes under cause-effect, per Ms. Brennan."
  • Letting in extra words. The AI adds words like 'whereas' and 'accordingly' that aren't on your list. Try: Add: "Only words from my tutor's list."
  • Trusting the AI to count words. AI is bad at counting. Ask for a total and it often lands 20% over. Try: Fix the shape: "function and words only, no examples."
  • Forgetting where it will be read. AI formats for a screen, with bold and headings that show up as stray symbols on a printed card. Try: Say: "Plain text, no bold, no headings."
