Learn vocabulary as the novel actually uses it
Practice: Keeping the AI to your sources. About 5 minutes.
About this exercise
Your English vocab quiz asks what words mean in the novel's sentences, and several are used in unusual ways. Get exactly 4 numbered lines in the form 'word: meaning in this sentence', each meaning under 10 words, plain text. Give the meaning the sentence shows, not the most common dictionary meaning, and use only the 4 words Mr. Ellis assigned.
Common mistakes when you ask AI for this
- Asking for definitions. The AI gives the most common dictionary meaning, which is exactly what the quiz marks wrong. Try: Say: "Give the meaning the sentence shows, not the common one."
- Not saying how many lines. The AI picks its own number, and it usually picks more lines than you need. Try: Be exact: "Exactly 4 numbered lines."
- Including the bonus words. The AI defines every word it sees, including the ones not on the quiz. Try: Add: "Only the 4 assigned words."
- Getting long explanations. The AI adds the common meaning, etymology and example sentences. Try: Show the shape: "crank: hard to start".
- Trusting the AI to count words. AI is bad at counting. Ask for a total and it often lands 20% over. Try: Cap each meaning: "each under 8 words."
What a strong prompt includes
- Asks for the meaning in context
- Says how many words
- Limits to the assigned words
- Shows the line shape
- Sets a length limit
