Explain the rock cycle demo to your study group chat
Practice: Saying who it's for. About 5 minutes.
About this exercise
Your Intro Geology study group chat is confused about the crayon demo from lab. Write a prompt that gets a group chat message under 60 words, plain text, explaining how the demo showed the three rock types, using only the lab's crayon steps, and ending with one question for the group. Use the corrected step from the TA, and skip the textbook's extra rock names.
Common mistakes when you ask AI for this
- Asking the general question. The AI explains the rock cycle from a textbook, with rock names and diagrams, not the lab demo. Try: Say: "Use only our crayon demo steps."
- Missing the TA's point. Your notes include your old mistake that step 3 was melting. Try: Add: "Make clear metamorphic is heat and pressure without melting."
- Not saying where it's posted. The AI writes a formal explanation with headings, which reads oddly in a group chat. Try: Add: "A casual group chat message, ending with a question for the group."
- Trusting the AI to count words. AI is bad at counting. Ask for a total and it often lands 20% over. Try: Cap each part: "one short sentence per rock type, then a question."
- Forgetting where it will be read. AI formats for a screen, with bold and headings that show up as stray symbols in the group chat. Try: Say: "Plain text, no bold, no headings."
What a strong prompt includes
- Says where it's posted
- Uses the demo
- Uses the TA's correction
- Asks for a closing question
- Sets a length limit
