Turn a study habits lesson into a note for parents

Practice: Saying who it's for. About 5 minutes.

About this exercise

Your 7th graders just finished a lesson on how to study for tests, and you want parents to help at home. Get a note that opens with the test date, then at most 3 bullets on what parents can do, under 70 words, plain text for the school's messaging app. Use the corrected test date and only the strategies from the lesson, with no generic tips.

Common mistakes when you ask AI for this

  • Not saying who reads it. The AI writes a student study guide instead of a note for parents. Try: Say: "A note to parents on what they can do at home."
  • Burying or missing the date change. Both dates are in your notes, and the AI may grab the first one. Try: Say: "Open with the new test date, Monday, Oct 27."
  • Adding generic tips. The AI pads the note with advice like 'get a good night's sleep'. Try: Add: "Only strategies from my lesson."
  • Trusting the AI to count words. AI is bad at counting. Ask for a total and it often lands 20% over. Try: Cap each part: "first line under 15 words, each bullet under 15."
  • Not limiting bullets. The AI lists every strategy and every don't. Try: Set a cap: "At most 3 bullets."

What a strong prompt includes

  • Says who it's for
  • Puts the date first
  • Uses the new date
  • Limits the bullets
  • Says to use only the material
