Describe a chart for a classmate who uses a screen reader

Practice: Saying who it's for. About 5 minutes.

About this exercise

Your Macro study partner, Devon, is blind and uses a screen reader, and the problem set includes a chart. Get a description under 60 words, plain text, that starts with the overall trend, then gives the highest and lowest values with their years, using only the chart's data. No phrases like 'as you can see', no symbols like arrows, and use the corrected 2021 figure.

Common mistakes when you ask AI for this

  • Not saying who it's for. The AI writes a visual description full of 'as shown' and arrow symbols that a screen reader reads badly. Try: Say: "For a classmate using a screen reader. No visual phrases or symbols."
  • Listing every number. The AI reads out all 7 values in order, and the trend gets lost. Try: Add: "Start with the overall trend, then only the high and low."
  • Missing the TA's fix. The chart's typo and the TA's correction are both in your material. Try: Add: "Use the corrected 2021 figure, 6.2%."
  • Trusting the AI to count words. AI is bad at counting. Ask for a total and it often lands 20% over. Try: Cap each part: "trend in one sentence under 20 words, then one sentence for high and low."
  • Forgetting where it will be read. AI formats for a screen, with bold and headings that show up as stray symbols in a screen reader. Try: Say: "Plain text, no bold, no headings."
