Break a research paper into dated milestones
- For College students
- You practice Giving the right context
- Time about 5 minutes
- Level Intermediate
About this exercise
Plan backward from the due date. Get a checklist of exactly 6 lines starting '- [ ]', each with a date and a milestone, under 100 words, plain text. Use only dates that aren't blocked, put the proposal first, and finish the final draft at least a day before it's due.
Common mistakes when you ask AI for this
- Using blocked days. The AI spreads work evenly and picks midterm or holiday days. Try: Add: "Nothing on Nov 10-13 or Nov 27-28."
- Finishing on the due date. The AI schedules the final draft the night it's due. Try: Say: "Final draft at least a day before it's due."
- No fixed shape. You get a long essay-writing guide. Try: Say: "Exactly 6 lines, each starting - [ ] with a date."
- Too many bullets. The AI loves long bullet lists. Try: Say: "At most 6 bullets."
- Trusting the AI to count words. AI is bad at counting. Ask for a total and it often lands 20% over. Try: Cap each part: "each line under 12 words."
- Forgetting where it's going. AI formats for a screen, with bold and headings that show up as stray symbols. Try: Say: "Plain text, no bold, no headings."
