Get feedback on a paragraph under three fixed headings
- For College students
- You practice Asking for a format you can use
- Time about 5 minutes
- Level Intermediate
About this exercise
Your instructor allows feedback on a draft paragraph but no rewrites. Get exactly three plain lines that start with Keep:, Fix first: and Ask yourself:, one sentence each, under 70 words total, plain text. Judge by the rubric. Don't write replacement sentences.
Common mistakes when you ask AI for this
- Asking for feedback only. The AI rewrites the paragraph, so it isn't your writing. Try: Say: "Do not rewrite or give replacement sentences."
- Not naming the standard. Without the rubric the AI fixes commas and style, not the real gap. Try: Add: "Judge it against Prof. Danner's rubric."
- No fixed headings. Without exact headings, feedback arrives as a long list. Try: Say: "Three lines: Keep:, Fix first:, Ask yourself:, one sentence each."
- Trusting the AI to count words. AI is bad at counting. Ask for a total and it often lands 20% over. Try: Cap each part: "each line under 12 words."
- Forgetting where it's going. AI formats for a screen, with bold and headings that show up as stray symbols. Try: Say: "Plain text, no bold, no headings."
What a strong prompt includes
- Gives the three headings
- Uses the rubric
- Says not to rewrite
- Limits to one sentence each
- Sets a length limit
