Decide a discount request against the term-based policy
- For Managers and team leads
- You practice Catching mistakes and made-up facts
- Time about 5 minutes
- Level Intermediate
About this exercise
Decide the discount request in exactly three lines starting "Request:", "Max allowed:" and "Decision:". Show each amount as math. Decision is exactly one of Approve, Escalate to Director or Decline, with a reason of 10 words or fewer. Plain text, under 50 words.
Common mistakes when you ask AI for this
- Escalating to the Director. The AE note says the Director will approve it. Try: Say: "A 1-year renewal can never exceed 5%; decide from the policy."
- Missing the math. The AI states the amounts without working. Try: Say: "Show each as percent x $50,000 = amount."
- Free-form decision. The AI writes a paragraph. Try: Name the three labels and the three allowed decisions.
- Getting markdown back. AI adds bold and headings by default, which show up as stray symbols where this is pasted. Try: Say "plain text, no bold, no headings, no asterisks".
- Trusting the AI to count words. AI is bad at counting and usually runs long, so a vague "keep it short" lands well over the limit. Try: Cap each part instead of the total, for example "each line under 15 words".
What a strong prompt includes
