Calculate NPS from response counts with the working

  • For Customer success managers

  • Time about 5 minutes
  • Level Beginner

About this exercise

Write exactly three lines starting "NPS:", "Change:" and "Detractors:". NPS shows the calculation like "(60 - 10) / 100 = 50". Change compares with last quarter. Detractors gives the share. Plain text, under 45 words.

Common mistakes when you ask AI for this

  • Using the promoter count. The marketing draft says NPS is 60. Try: Say: "NPS = (promoters - detractors) / responses x 100."
  • Missing the change. The AI gives NPS only. Try: Say: "Change: last quarter 42 to this quarter."
  • Wrong layout. The AI adds the response rate and notes. Try: Name the three labels; nothing else.
  • Getting markdown back. AI adds bold and headings by default, which show up as stray symbols where this is pasted. Try: Say "plain text, no bold, no headings, no asterisks".
  • Trusting the AI to count words. AI is bad at counting and usually runs long, so a vague "keep it short" lands well over the limit. Try: Cap each part instead of the total, for example "each line under 15 words".

What a strong prompt includes

  • Asks for plain text
  • Sets a length limit
  • States the formula
  • Names the labels
