About this exercise

Write the memo for the product VP with three headings in capitals, in this order: REVENUE TIED TO THE GAP, WHO SAID WHAT, WHAT WE DO NOT KNOW. Count an account as tied only if the customer put the requirement in writing (contract, email or ticket). Show the sum. Recommend nothing about building. Plain text, under 170 words.

Common mistakes when you ask AI for this

  • Counting everyone. The AI adds all five accounts for $610k. Try: Say: "Count only accounts where the customer put the requirement in writing."
  • Recommending a build. The AI follows sales leadership. Try: Say: "Recommend nothing about building."
  • No sum shown. The AI states a total without working. Try: Say: "Show the sum: $200k + $120k + $60k."
  • Getting markdown back. AI adds bold and headings by default, which show up as stray symbols where this is pasted. Try: Say "plain text, no bold, no headings, no asterisks".
  • Trusting the AI to count words. The AI runs long and cannot count its own words. Try: Cap each part ("each line under 12 words") and add "under N words in total".
  • Leaving a requirement unstated. The AI follows its own defaults unless the prompt spells this out. Try: State it plainly in your prompt: the headings REVENUE TIED TO THE GAP, WHO SAID WHAT and WHAT WE DO NOT KNOW appear in capitals in that order.

What a strong prompt includes

  • Names the three headings
  • Requires written evidence
  • Asks for the sum
  • Bans a recommendation
  • Asks for plain text
  • Sets a word cap
