Summarize survey comments with exact short quotes and counts
- For Managers and team leads
- You practice Keeping the AI to your sources
- Time about 5 minutes
- Level Intermediate
About this exercise
Write three lines starting "Praise:", "Complaint:" and "Mixed:". Each line gives how many comments are in that group (like "3 of 8") and one exact quote of 10 words or fewer copied from a comment in that group, in quotation marks. A comment with both praise and a complaint is Mixed. Plain text, under 70 words.
Common mistakes when you ask AI for this
- Paraphrasing quotes. The AI rewrites the comments. Try: Say: "Copy one exact quote in quotation marks."
- Misgrouping mixed comments. The AI puts comments 3 and 6 under Praise. Try: Say: "A comment with praise and a complaint is Mixed."
- No counts. The AI writes a narrative. Try: Say: "Give counts like 3 of 8 on each line."
- Getting markdown back. AI adds bold and headings by default, which show up as stray symbols where this is pasted. Try: Say "plain text, no bold, no headings, no asterisks".
- Trusting the AI to count words. The AI runs long and cannot count its own words. Try: Cap each part ("each line under 12 words") and add "under N words in total".
- Leaving a requirement unstated. The AI follows its own defaults unless the prompt spells this out. Try: State it plainly in your prompt: the output has exactly three lines starting 'Praise:', 'Complaint:' and 'Mixed:'.
