Decide an admin access request against three written rules

About this exercise

Check the request against rules R1 to R3. Output three lines starting "Decision: Approve" (only if all three rules are met) or "Decision: Need more info", then "Failed:" (the rule numbers and why, with the dates) and "Ask:" (exactly what to request, and from whom). Today is Nov 6, 2026. Plain text, under 80 words.

Common mistakes when you ask AI for this

  • Giving in to urgency. The AI approves because the audit starts Monday. Try: Say: "Apply the rules, not the deadline."
  • Missing the training date. The AI doesn't compute that Oct 2025 is over 12 months ago. Try: Say: "Compare the training date with today, Nov 6, 2026."
  • Vague asks. The AI says 'provide missing info'. Try: Say: "The Ask line names the item and who provides it."
  • Getting markdown back. AI adds bold and headings by default, which show up as stray symbols where this is pasted. Try: Say "plain text, no bold, no headings, no asterisks".
  • Trusting the AI to count words. AI is bad at counting and usually runs long, so a vague "keep it short" lands well over the limit. Try: Cap each part instead of the total, for example "each line under 15 words".

What a strong prompt includes

  • Names the three lines
  • Gives today's date
  • Says to apply rules not urgency
  • Asks for plain text
  • Sets a length limit
