Summarize a policy update for managers: old, new, action
- For Managers and team leads
- You practice Saying who it's for
- Time about 5 minutes
- Level Intermediate
About this exercise
Write a summary for people managers in plain text, under 120 words, with exactly three labeled lines: Old:, New:, What to do:. Old: and New: are one sentence each. What to do: is two sentences and must include the effective date and who to contact. Use only the policy memo, and do not give legal conclusions. HR reviews before it is sent.
Common mistakes when you ask AI for this
- Repeating the rumor. The AI mentions the $90 limit. Try: Say: "Use only the policy memo; leave out rumors."
- Missing date or contact. The AI forgets the contact. Try: Say: "What to do: two sentences including the effective date and who to contact."
- Wrong figures. The AI mixes old and new limits. Try: Say: "Old: $60, New: $75 with the receipt rule."
- Labels. The AI writes headings with bullets. Try: Say: "Three lines labeled Old:, New:, What to do:."
- Trusting the AI to count words. AI is bad at counting. Ask for a total word limit and it often lands over it. Try: Cap each part instead, for example: "each line under 15 words."
- Markdown. The AI bolds words or adds headings. Try: Say: "Plain text, no bold, no headings."
