About this exercise

Tomorrow at 10 am is your final-round panel for a job you really need, and the recruiter wants a short written note on your 9-month gap first. Write the reply you, Priya Nair, send to Dana tonight. Plain text, under 105 words, starting "Hi Dana," and signed "Priya". Use 3 or 4 sentences about the gap. Lead with what you built, not with the layoff. Say the layoff was company-wide in a few words. Tie one thing you did to what Halden Health needs. Mention family care in a few words, with no health details. No apologies, no "unfortunately", and nothing about money or other rejections.

Common mistakes when you ask AI for this

  • Opening with the layoff. The AI starts with the layoff and an apology, so the reader meets the gap before the work. Try: Add: "Lead with what I built at Eastside Food Bank and its result. No apologies."
  • Leaving out the fit. The AI lists activities without tying them to the job's priorities. Try: Add: "Say the layoff was company-wide in a clause, and tie my scheduling result to Halden's no-show problem."
  • Oversharing and sounding desperate. The AI adds your dad's surgery, your savings or how much you want the job. Try: Add: "Mention family care in a few words, no health details, and nothing about money or other rejections."
  • Trusting the AI to count words. AI writes a long, heartfelt note, often with a subject line and bold text. Try: Say "3 or 4 sentences, under 90 words, plain text".

What a strong prompt includes
